The Public Library of Amsterdam (OBA) is more than a place to borrow books — it’s a public living room for the city. With an outdated website that no longer reflected its role or usability needs, OBA asked for a redesign that would better serve its diverse audiences and support its broader mission.
The visual concept balances clarity with warmth. A flexible layout, strong typographic rhythm and accessible color system create space for a wide range of content — from children's activities to lectures and local initiatives. The interface is clean and intuitive, designed to guide without overwhelming, supported by subtle animations that add flow and focus.
This project shows how thoughtful design can strengthen the public value of digital platforms. The site connects citizens to knowledge, culture and each other — extending OBA’s role as an inclusive, civic space into the digital realm.
The new website gives OBA a future-proof platform that reflects its identity and meets users' expectations. A tree test with 145 participants showed a 74% task success rate. The CMS setup empowers OBA’s editors and the modular structure supports evolving content needs.
